Smoking cessation in chronic kidney disease

Posted 22 Apr, 2026

The RACP internal medicine journal has just released Practical recommendations for treating patients with chronic kidney disease in Australia: a multidisciplinary approach. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant public health challenge in Australia and affects about 10% of the population with, with substantial morbidity and mortality.

The article outlines simple, practical, evidence-based recommendations to guide healthcare practitioners in improving CKD management across Australia.

Nine unique recommendations were developed, which include ensuring that all cardio-metabolic risk factors are assisted and managed proactively.

Cigarette smoking cessation has been addressed specifically. Cessation has been shown to reduce the progression of CKD and should be prioritised. While nicotine replacement and adjunctive pharmacotherapy have not been specifically studied in a CKD population, their benefits are considered to be comparable and are generally recommended.
