At the recent Festival of Nursing in Melbourne, our Nurse Advisor, Stacey Ridley RN, and GP Lead, Dr Cora Mayer, highlighted the vital role nurses play in smoking and vaping cessation. Their Spotlight presentation explored how nurses can support patients to quit through Quitline referrals, including how the service works, the referral process, and what patients can expect. It was fantastic to connect with so many nurses and experience the energy and enthusiasm across the profession.
The presentation generated strong engagement from delegates, with many visiting us at the Quit Centre booth seeking practical evidence-based guidance, resources for priority populations, and training to help them confidently support patients to quit smoking and vaping.
Conversations revealed that while many nurses recognise the importance of asking patients about smoking and vaping, there is strong interest in practical support to move beyond assessment and provide advice, treatment and referrals. Vaping and emerging nicotine products were also major topics of interest, along with tailored resources for priority populations.
